FAQ on design system services

  • What is difference between design system and product design?

One of the main goals of a design system is to make a consistent product design solving common problems, and creating a style guide for each single source. In different countries, product designers are engaged in different tasks for the website. In each case, the designer develops the product technology and makes it as attractive as possible for customers. They also try to use the latest innovation and expertise to deliver the best strategy of a website and product and sound quality according to the specific needs of the company or the client.

A distinctive feature of product design for a website is that a specialist can work with a project on an ongoing basis, and the task will not have a logical conclusion. Instead, the UI designer creates an interface, coordinates it with the customer, and passes it on to the developer. The product designer works with the project for a long time, improves it, and collects user opinions.

It is enough for a UI/UX designer to find an illustrated embodiment and solutions for a digital project and design systems. Then, design and development teams make sure that all representatives of the target audience use the interface, different reusable components for digital transformation and design consistency, and become involved in the brand's life.

  • What are tasks of a product designer in a design team

Product design helps users deal with problems. His work is to create guiding principles, efficiency templates, and the shortest route to loyal clients.

Product design is not always about beauty and convenience. Positive emotions from an excellent interface will quickly dissolve if users realize the product is useless. The development team and branding agencies must ensure that people are involved in getting to know the digital project and don't lose focus on it.

A product designer team can be conditionally called the author of the project. Imagine a writer who has finished a new novel and now wants to send it to print. First, he sends the manuscript or a collaboration result to the publisher and waits for approval. Then, like no one else, he can convey and support the emotions that his characters broadcast. This is how a good product designer should work, even if the design team came to work with a ready-made digital project or e commerce projects.

  • What mean design systems?

Design systems are a combination of three entities:

Visual language is what we see.
The framework is a visual language library, its code.
Guidelines are rules for companies and the designer team how things should look and how they should be applied.

We can consider the design system an individual product within any IT product.

    Visual language
The visual component of design systems includes many features:

    Colors
    Fonts
    Space
    Object Shapes
    Icons on the same page
    Images
    Interactions with clients and services
    Animations
    UI Components and systems
    Sounds

The task of visual language is to convey brand values to the consumer. For example, you can use warm colors and appropriate images to get a homely atmosphere. To give some other brand characteristics, for example, rigor and honesty, use specific fonts and shapes on the platform. Visual language is one factor in how a user remembers a particular product, technology tools, and innovation code. Team of designers should always keep in mind all needs of their clients. With innovation and collaboration with many companies, brands and agencies, they expertise and make the best implementation using different design systems in their collaboration with the client.

    Framework
A framework is essentially a visual language code for projects. Thanks to it, all visual tools can be taken from the library and easily applied to all your products.

Let's imagine a simple situation. So, we have one button, "Pay the bill." And here we need to put the same button for another page, and only it will be called "Transfer money."

What if we don't have a framework? Then this button must be created anew, even if copying the existing one. And if we decide to change the button's color, do we have to manually change the color of all such buttons? And if there are dozens, hundreds, or more of such buttons?

Therefore, a centralized library of visual language implementation is needed, which will allow teams and agencies to create and reuse every detail of the product.

    Guidelines
For everyone who interacts with the design system to "speak the same language," rules must be developed.

For example, one designer thinks the button is not bright enough and needs to change the hue closer to magenta. The other is sure that the button should be dark red. At the same time, market developers have been arguing for a week about the ideal code for implementing the search form and its efficiency. All this leads to chaos in the company and product.

It would seem that there are many conditions. How to describe everything so as not to get confused by the rules? Describe only what is needed for a particular element:

    What is this structure element?
    Where is it used?
    What tasks does it solve?

Also, you can describe the anatomy of UI components: designate the structure and all the parameters from which they are built.

Applying the data of the design system agency allows you to speed the work process for everyone: brands and agencies. They set a specific framework for the flight of fancy and understand that any change in design systems can affect many screens, brand identity, and user interaction scenarios in the product. This develops a sense of responsibility in every area of work on any, even the smallest, detail of the product.

  • What is a design system for?

As with any IT product, it is essential to answer the question: what is a design system for? The answer will clarify the product's value for clients and the team. So let's take a deeper look.

    Automation of process and services
Automation is the most apparent value. The design system will automate processes and save time for other tasks.

Designers create a library of components in the graphics editor and use them. Developers, in turn, use previously implemented features from the framework.

    Iteration
The ability to inherit and automatically apply changes to project design system elements is a powerful tool for a product team. You can quickly implement cosmetic or even major edits in one place. Thus, step by step, you can improve the product endlessly.

    Consistency of design systems
The objects and entities that we use in the product and perform the same work should strive for unification and to be similar.

When we use similar functions in a product of design systems, it becomes familiar and convenient: we intuitively know how the button works and looks and where it is located.

    Synchronization
All elements and design components in IT digital products must have a common language of communication-based on clear rules.

When building design systems, new product team members perform tasks within the product without wasting time building up: designers and a design team support the process and create new elements for the platform based on a given visual language, and developers know exactly how to implement and use them.

    More time for UX
This value is, in fact, the sum of all the previous benefits. Manual work with a visual language, which used to take a lot of time, is becoming as automated as possible.

After creating a design system, you can allocate more time for research and design the user flow of product scenarios in more detail.

    Prototyping speed
The design system allows you to quickly assemble a prototype from ready-made elements and test a hypothesis. This, in turn, saves the project budget and gives quick results.

    Features of the design system
Successful design systems must evolve with the product and its brand strategy. Otherwise, there will be a clear desynchronization between them: the product will develop, and the design system will gradually lag behind the creation and lose its relevance.

Suppose development teams and services have formulated a new system, new design elements, and design components with pattern libraries and code snippets for visual and verbal interaction with customers. In that case, the visual language of the design system needs to be adapted. The design system must keep pace with the business and carry the right brand ideology, developing and transforming.
